School of Nursing
History
The Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing accepted its first
student in 1901 with its first graduation taking place in 1904. From
this time on, the School of Nursing has grown and advanced with the
Hospital toward a mutual goal of excellence in health care and nursing
education. The School of Nursing has maintained programs of affiliation
with other hospitals prominent in their respective fields to provide
students with opportunities for experience in all areas of nursing
care.
Program Objectives
Upon completion of the Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing, the graduate will:
- Utilize the nursing process when providing for the comprehensive physiological, psychological, socio-cultural and spiritual needs of the client.
- Incorporate Watson’s carative factors in meeting the needs of the client.
- Create therapeutic relationships with clients at various developmental levels to reach optimal wellness.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to improve quality of life for individuals, families and communities.
- Apply ethical-legal principles in managing the care of clients.
- Exemplify professionalism in the management and delivery of safe client care.
- Demonstrate self-direction, motivation and responsibility for professional growth.
- Function as a beginning professional nurse in a variety of healthcare delivery settings.

Application/Admission Policies
Application to the School should be made as early as possible, since
space is limited. Students are admitted to the School in July of each
year. The application process begins in February and is completed by
July for the Fall term that starts in September.
Processing of Applications
Each applicant is evaluated on an individual basis. Applicants are
accepted on the basis of average or better achievement in high school.
A class rank in the upper two-fifths is desirable. After all application
materials (including the pre-admission exam) are received by the School
of Nursing, and provided the applicant has completed all academic requirements,
a formal interview will be scheduled. An ad hoc committee of the Faculty
Organization (hereinafter referred to as the Admissions Committee)
meets regularly to review and evaluate all applicants. Within one week,
applicants are informed by letter of the decision of that committee.
This committee reserves the right to select only those applicants who
demonstrate evidence that they will be able to fulfill all of the requirements
and meet the standards of the School of Nursing.
